Antiques, Fine Art & Collectibles. Vintage Carved Hopi Mocking Kachina A Honahni Wood Sculpture Signed Painted Art. DESCRIPTION Original vintage wooden Hopi Kachina. Made by the master carver Alton Honahni this signed and titled Kachina is called "Mocking Kachina". This carved sculpture depicts a mocking spirit dancing with his rattle in his right hand and a partial staff in his left hand.
Kwikwilyaka is the Mocking Kachina. As a clown he has little personality of his own but fastens like a leech onto any activity that catches his eye. With mirror-like accuracy he will reflect every action of the unfortunate whom he decides to mimic. He drives the other kachinas such as Hó-e to strong measures to rid themselves of this unwanted echo. Should a person in the audience become the focus of this undesired attention, he must wait until something else diverts the kachina. Many times, Hó-e Katsinas will rid themselves of this irritant by pretending to set its hair on fire. When Kwikwilyaka mimics this action, he actually sets his own hair on fire. This piece is carved from a single piece of cottonwood root and decorated with typical traditional pastel color and has only remnants of hair left in purple. All Kachina Dolls are carved out of the root of the Cottonwood tree.
The Cottonwood tree's vigorous roots travel far and deep in search of water. There is spiritual importance in this fact, as the Hopis are dry farmers in an arid part of Arizona and the search for water is of critical importance to their culture.
Marked: Hopi'91 A Honahni This would make a great addition to any vintage kachina or South Western wooden sculpture. This would make a great house warming gift.
MEASUREMENTS Kachina measures 5.75" tall by 3" wide by 2.25 deep and weighs just over 1oz. CONDITION In good condition with wear and tear commensurate with age, he appears to be missing part of his staff from his left hand (please see all pictures as they form part of the condition description).
