Vintage Black Ogre Kachina Signed by Jyazzie 70s or 80s Native American
This is truly a Rare Find -Offered here is a Vintage late 70s - early 80s Black Ogre Kachina - This is an absolutely stunning kachina-well made-great detailing. Paint is good and bright / detailing is impeccable! Black and White Ogre kachinas - are disciplinarians of the children. This figure can be represented as black or white. Their large snouts / bulging eyes and scary demeanor help to keep children in line.
They will often carry rattles / whips or branches and if a child is misbehaving will appear closely to them - making the child think twice about acting up! This Black Ogre kachina stands 14 inches tall / 10 wide measured from arm to end arrow and is approx. 3 deep from shoulder to extended arm- he is a larger kachina great for sitting on a mantle or shelf.
This is a Vintage signed piece by a very well know carver family - although I do not know which of the Jyazzie family created him. It is signed on the bottom of the base " B Ogre / Jyazzie".
This is a very well carved kachina and is beautifully constructed with very intricate detailing. He wears traditional ceremonial garb which is kid leather / the images have been hand-painted. He wears a soft leather around chest soft fur tail and boots and carries both a arrow and a rattle. His headpiece is well done and the feathers are in good condition.
He has been carved from cottonwood and his horns appear to be a little heavier wood red..
