Though representative of the strength and ferocity of a buffalo, the docile nature of the animal is where the true power derives. The Buffalo Warrior Kachina is considered one of the most powerful Kachinas, he has the power to kill evil thoughts and is a spiritual protector. The Standing Buffalo Warrior is not a dancer, but is responsible for an adequate food supply for the winter. Buffalo Warriors usually appear in action, as though they were hard at work.
This kachina is holding a shield in his right hand and a spear in his right hand, ready to go to battle. His skirt is leather embellished with real shells.
His legs are covered with white fur. His shield has real feathers. His head and shoulders are covered in white fur that ends in a long cape down his back; his head has the two buffalo horns. There is a painted clam shell at his breast where the fur meets. The fringes and trim on him are leather.
He is hand carved from wood and is balanced on one foot on a slice of tree wood. Alta Apachito has signed the kachina on the the bottom. This is a very exquisite vintage piece and in very excellent condition.
